The bay that holds most of them

Between Greenland and Baffin Island there is a stretch of water that goes almost entirely dark for months. Most of the world's narwhals spend their winter there, under a lid of moving pack ice, breathing through cracks that open and close with the wind.

They dive to fifteen hundred metres in that dark, repeatedly, to feed on halibut. No light. No margin. The animal is built for exactly one set of conditions and is superb within it.

That is the design brief we keep coming back to. Not a thing that does everything adequately — a thing that does its one job in conditions that would embarrass most gear.
