Four months without a sunrise

What the polar night does to the way northerners build.

In Longyearbyen the sun sets in late October and does not return until February. Not dim — gone. Roughly four months of civil twilight and dark, every single year, forever.

You cannot design casually for that. A zipper that jams is not an inconvenience at −20 °C in the dark; it is the difference between a good night and a bad one. Northern design reads as minimal from the outside, but the restraint is not aesthetic. It is what remains after you delete every part that could fail you.

Nothing extra is not a style. It's what's left when you remove everything that could break.
